Models Can be Fans Too

I know some of you are probably disappointed that Freja didn't walk in the big FNO runway show yesterday, but did you really expect her too? Her track record with Vogue (read Anna Wintour) organized events is such that an appearance yesterday would have been completely surprising and out of the ordinary. Never one to show up at the Met Gala or anything of that nature, Freja's partial existence outside the fashion establishment is what keeps her intriguing and mysterious.

Even though Anna doesn't seem to be a fan, there are plenty of other people willing to sing Freja's praises. The latest to join the bunch is supermodel Yasmin Le Bon. You might know her as the wife of Duran Duran lead singer Simon Le Bon....and if you've never heard of Duran Duran, then you're either beyond saving or too young to be reading this blog.

According to Vogue UK:
"It is Vogue cover star Freja Beha Erichsen, however, that gets Le Bon's favourite model vote.

'There aren't many dark-haired, dark-eyed girls around so when they do come about they need to be exceptionally good, which Freja is'"
It's not much, but it's still always nice to hear Freja being admired by people within the industry. Kind of makes me feel like I got it right, you know?

More Than a Clothes Hanger

Maybe my perception is a bit skewed, but doesn't it seem like models are once again back in the spotlight as individuals with personalities? Definitely not back to the level of the 1990's Supermodels, but no where near as cold and dismissive as the early 2000's felt. These days it feels like people everywhere want to hear what models have to say, wear what they wear, and follow every turn of their career.

I know this is all anecdotal evidence, but the model threads on tFS are exploding with hyper activity. Just think of a model (besides Freja) in your head and you can bet that someone has created a "fuckyeah" tumblr in her honor. It just feels like models at all levels of the industry are gaining in recognition and success (i.e. Rosie HW cast in the new Transformers movie and models edging out celebs in campaigns). Does it feel like this to anyone else, or is it just me?

I realize that my perception might be more than a bit skewed because I keep up with a lot of agencies and new models for fun (yes, for fun...I'm weird like that), so I always have models on my mind. And maybe this is why they seem to be more prominent to me, buoyed along by an internet culture conducive to the cultivation of niches that are otherwise too specialized to have warranted attention before. We can practically trace Freja's career from the very beginning, with only a few holes here and there. But with a model like Missy Rayder, who's career height came before the internet played such a huge role in fashion and models, the early days of her career aren't nearly as well documented. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I sense a new era where models are once again becoming celebrities in their own right.

The eminent Cathy Horyn seems to sense a small part of this as well. Just read the opening sentences of her write up on the Valentino HC show:
"A thick mob of people, mostly young and nearly all clutching cameras, stood in the blazing 6 p.m. sun outside the entrance to the Valentino Show in the Place Vendôme. They extended to the curb, and guests had to walk through a narrow path the onlookers seemed reluctant to provide. Liz Hurley was inside, in a pretty fuchsia slip dress, but most of the other V.I.P.’s were young socialites and, of course, models. The throng was waiting for them, a glimpse of someone famous and beautiful."
So maybe I'm not too off the mark here. For when did a model like Freja, a model who isn't Kate Moss or being touted as the next big thing a la Lara Stone, become popular enough to garner a two page cover feature in one of the big Vogues?? Just think about it for a moment, and you'll see how amazing it is all things considered. She's popular to be sure, but definitely not what you would call "mainstream." So the fact that Vogue UK put her on their cover and wrote a feature story on her says something, don't you think? Model as an individual. Model as a voice. Model as role model. Model as more than just a clothes hanger.

A few excerpts stuck out to me:
"Face to face, Freja's personality is harder to discern. Although she embodies an intoxicating cool, she's shy, reserved and defensive about her privacy in a way that doesn't invite girly conversation. While her slouch suggests someone who isn't entirely at east with her five feet 10 inches (she was 5ft 9in by the age of 12), she has fantastic command of her body in front of the camera."
Taking the above into account, I wonder how Freja would feel if she knew this blog existed? Now I'm SO glad that I've always made it a point to stay away from her private life and focus instead on her work. But if she's as private as they say she is, even such an intense focus on her work is probably disconcerting. People say work is work, but as a model your work is your body. You model long enough (do anything long enough for that matter) and it becomes part of you, nearly inseparable from the way you define yourself. So maybe the intense scrutiny over Freja's work on this blog constitutes a different kind of invasion of privacy? I don't know. I haven't received any ceased and desist letters yet so.....
"'Freja is entirely her own person,' says photographer Josh Olins. 'I love to photographer her. What you see at first is this tough boyishness, but then comes something else, a sensitive, softer side. She's beautifully androgynous.' For all this boy-talk, though, Freja is very pretty, with baby-soft olive skin, a high forehead and deep brown eyes that flicker when her fringe skims her lashes. 'Freja's innate sense of style somehow translates into the way she is photographed,' adds Vogue's fashion director Lucinda Chambers. 'She is one of only a handful of models who have this unique combination of a strong personality and look, while at the same time being a total chameleon.'"
I knew I loved Lucinda for a reason. This is exactly what I've been saying, and what I try to explore, on this blog. I feel justified, and not so crazy for posting all my long babbling posts. :) Anyway, the article is a great read so make sure to check it out if you haven't already. There are lots of great tidbits about Freja in there, including bits about her upbringing, her family and her hobbies. She comes across very well on the page, just like she did on film. Memorable, funny and endearing enough to convert the naysayers and win over new fans.

IMG & W

The upcoming June issue of W Magazine has an editorial featuring some of the many great models on the roster of IMG in a Fall fashion preview. Running the gamut from industry legend (Liya) to newly crowned it girls of the moment (Julija & Sam) and everyone in between, Freja manages to snag the opening shot for the whole story:

Best In Show
W Magazine June 2010
Ph: Craig McDean
Styling: Alex White

This marks only the fourth time that she's worked with McDean. The last time they worked together resulted in this brilliantly dynamic editorial for Interview magazine. And even though there's just this one shot for W, it's another great one. What better way to drawn in an audience than with a captivating, beautiful, and distinct face? Now frame that face with gloriously curly hair, and a fuzzy gray sweater and you have the perfect picture of Fall.

Even though I wish Freja and McDean would collaborate on more only-girl editorials (3 out of the 4 times they've worked together have resulted in one-shots like this), having something short but sweet is better than having nothing at all.

I also have to wonder if this is the last time we'll see Freja styled by Alex White? With Stefano Tonchi now at the helm of W, Alex's position there is uncertain as staff shuffles are likely to continue happening. And that's really too bad because Freja has been a consistent fixture in W under Alex's styling hands. But perhaps she'll continue styling for Karl and Chanel, and perhaps Freja will keep on landing Chanel campaigns. One can only hope for the best, since this is most likely the last time we'll see Freja in W for a while now that Tonchi wants to take the magazine in a different direction. Think more "lifestyle" (read: celebrities) and less "fashion" (not that there was even that much to being with). Yeah, I'm a little bitter.....

Oh well, more international magazines it is!

Out of the Running

Usually around this time of year, in addition to Chanel Cruise news, we start to hear about the Dansk Fashion Awards. But this year it's been unusually quiet in regards to the later. And that's because Freja is not nominated for Danish Female Model of the Year this time around. :(

After winning the award each year it's been handed out (twice so far), Freja will have to relinquish her title to one of the upcoming Danes spotlighted this year:

As much as I love Freja, I think this is good for the Dansk awards. If you keep giving an award to the same person it kind of diminishes the point of having the award and voting process in the first place, non? And yes, Freja is by far the most recognizable, successful Danish model working in the fashion industry right now, but Denmark has some other great models too. So it's nice to see them getting their time to shine.

Amanda is quickly making a name for herself despite her short (by model standards) 5'8 1/2" frame. Her perfect proportions help, and so do the backings of Russel Marsh and Miuccia Prada as evidenced by her runway appearances at both Prada and Miu Miu. Factor in her gorgeously refined face, a personal style that's effortlessly cool with a hint of grunge, and a supposed booking in a major Fall campaign and you have a new Danish star in the making. Caroline is coming straight off a tremendous catwalk run in Paris, walking for only the very top of the top. Already shot by Meisel in this month's VI, and turning her attentions towards modeling full time come July after she finishes with school, you can bet on seeing her lovely face in all cities for SS11. And Cathrine...well, I don't know much about her at all. In fact, I know nothing. But she's quite the delicate beauty and perhaps we'll see her make her international catwalk debut soon.

It would have been nice to see Freja at the ceremony, if only to see if she'd dress up (ha!). But if she had been nominated along with Amanda and Caroline, I can honestly say that I wouldn't have known who to root for. All three appeal to me for different reasons, and this just speaks to the depth and quality of the models coming from Denmark right now. So hooray for the Danes. You're having a great moment.

Oh, and in case any of you actually care who wins this thing, the awards are being held Wednesday night.

Shout Outs

A few mentions of Freja lately in the fashion atmosphere.

Fellow Dane and model Amanda Norgaard talked with vogue.co.uk about walking the SS10 Chanel show:
"There were such incredible models - like Natasha Poly and Freja Beha - backstage and I started to think, 'Ok, this is really good'!"
And Kaiser Karl told WWD why he likes working with Freja so much:
“I just think she is the most modern girl and the most elegant person...”
It's always nice to hear good things about your favorite models. I'm not one for cattiness and drama, so I'd rather hear nice stuff like this instead of backstage dirt. Although....if you know any I would mind it too much if you shared. ;)

And to go along with the small discussion taking place on this previous post about eyewear vs. mainline Chanel campaigns, it seems like Freja will one again reprise her staring role in the former, in addition to sharing the role with Abbey in the later. I definitely can't wait to see what both campaigns will look like. As established by an anonymous commenter in that previous post, Chanel has a history of making the two campaigns entirely different in style and aesthetic. So for all the people out there who were disappointed at the news that Abbey would also be in the mainline campaign, you can take comfort knowing that Freja's lovely face is the only one you'll see staring back at you from under chic Chanel sunglasses.

What a great season this is turning out to be: Chanel Mainline, Max Mara and Chanel Eyewear. And with May 11th and the Chanel Cruise show fast approaching, I can safely say that there won't be any dearth of Freja news.

Backstage Glimpses

I've seen so many pictures of Freja in the past few weeks that I just can't remember what's new and what's old. I think these are new backstage images, but I'm posting them here instead of at tFS just in case they are reposts.

Chloe

Karl Lagerfeld

Valentino

My mind is an absolute jumble of images. It's hard enough trying to keep up with all the collections, but this season I decided it would also be fun to keep up with as many new girls as I possibly can in addition to keeping tabs on Freja. Hence, my addiction to the Runway Model Showlist thread at tFS. I like to see how many girls I can identify in a show, and I've definitely gotten better since the start of the season but I'm still no match for the pros over there. Some of the posters are simply amazing in their identifying abilities. Face covered up? No problem. They'll just use the ears as a reference point.

Interestingly enough, after a while you start to see similar features in girls that look nothing alike. And you start to see certain facial feature paragons present throughout all the girls' faces no matter where they're from. It's quite the lesson in geography and anthropology, albeit not a very productive one. Oh well. At the very least, I can spell Eastern European last names like no other. Do you think I can put that on my resume?

Fashionable Early

Freja has already showed up in Paris! I thought we wouldn't see her until Balenciaga tomorrow morning, but she decided to start early by walking the Gareth Pugh show today. Pugh is one of the most talked about young designers and protege of Rick Owen's wife, Michele Lamy. So I guess this runway appearance isn't completely surprising considering that a) Freja walked the Rick Owens show last season, b) she's in high demand this season and c) Gareth was exploring androgyny for this collection.

I'm so excited now that the Paris shows have started. There are good shows to look forward to every single day so this next week is going to fly by. It will also be interesting to see what happens casting wise. Rumor has it some of the bigger name girls who have been absent thus far will return to walk the Parisian catwalks. So where does this leave all the newer models and the models like Freja? And will Paris debut some new girls heretofore unseen?

The model enthusiast in me can't wait for all the drama to unfold.

With a Bang, Not a Whimper

And here I thought yesterday was going to be an easy, quiet day for Freja. Well, I couldn't have been more wrong. Freja decided to start off this SS10 season with a resounding bang, walking for Rag & Bone, opening the Arise: African Promise Collective show (strangely enough) and opening Erin Wasson's RVCA show. Only her first day and she already has three shows and two opening slots under her belt? This season is certainly getting off on the right foot.

@ :30, :40 and 1:35

@ :30 and 1:25

Her walk seems little different to me, mostly in the arms. It's subtle, but better. Anyway, can we use yesterday as a good indicator of things to come for the rest of the month? Will the pace of Freja's show season match the explosive pace of her recent editorial work? What other surprises are in store for us? The frenzy of fashion month is back full force and I'm totally on the edge of my seat and completely caught up in the whirlwind, despite my best efforts to maintain some semblance of a normal life. Sigh. I love it though!

I'm also happy to see some of my other favorite girls doing well so far. Karolin Wolter closed Rag & Bone, and Karmen Pedaru was at Preen along with Sara Blomqvist.

I'm kind of curious. Who are some of your other favorite models? Any newbies you think I should check out? Who are you excited to see walk? Speaking of newbies, I think Julija Step is definitely one to watch. She walked Rag & Bone and she's been showing up a lot of other shows. If IMG plays the right cards, I see major stuff for this classically gorgeous girl.
